LionLink statutory consultation launch – January 2026

National Grid Ventures (NGV) has now launched a statutory consultation on our proposals for LionLink, a new subsea electricity cable (known as an interconnector) between the UK and the Netherlands.

About LionLink
LionLink is a first-of its-kind technology which will connect to the Dutch offshore wind farm, Nederwiek 3, in partnership with TenneT. LionLink will enable the cross-border transmission of clean electricity with the capacity to deliver up to 2 gigawatts (GW) of electricity, which will be vital in supporting greater energy security and delivering more affordable energy for consumers.
LionLink would transport enough energy to power approximately 2.5 million homes, playing an important role in building a more secure and resilient future energy system. The link will also help lower household energy bills and provide clean green and renewable energy to the UK.

Statutory consultation
Our statutory consultation will be open for a period of eight weeks from Tuesday 13 January until Tuesday 10 March 2026.
We will be seeking your feedback on our refined proposals for LionLink, which we have developed using feedback from our two non-statutory consultations, as well as extensive environmental and technical assessments. Our preferred options for LionLink include:

Kiln Lane Substation;

Proposed underground high voltage alternating current (HVAC) cables between Kiln Lane Substation and the proposed converter station;

Proposed converter station east of Saxmundham;

Proposed underground high voltage direct current (HVDC) cables between the proposed converter station and the proposed landfall site;

Proposed landfall site at Walberswick; and

Proposed offshore HVDC cables from the proposed landfall site to the edge of the UK’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

During this period, we hope to engage with as many residents and stakeholders as possible through our in-person exhibitions and webinars. Please see attached our consultation leaflet, which detail the dates and times of our consultation events, including further details about how to engage with our consultation.
More information on how we intend to consult the community can be found in our Statement of Community Consultation, which is located on our dedicated project website: nationalgrid.com/national-grid-ventures/lionlink/library
